Web Counter Tools You Can’t Do Without

I’m talking about stats up to ….. I’m serious. I track everything including ad campaigns, leads, ROI, even search engine traffic, and so much more. I can’t talk enough about how important web tracking is.

Pull my website source page and see that I have two very important things in the footer area: One is Statcounter code and other is Google Analytics.

StatCounter

I highly recommend you use this web counter tool. It is FREE! You should be ready to go less than 5 minutes after you sign up. Just insert your Statcounter code then go. I even pay small membership fee to get a larger log file size.

Features: Keyword Analysis, Came From, Search Engine Wars, Visitor Path, Visitor Length, and more.

You can see what pages this visitor browsed on my blog. Cool huh?

statpath.jpg

Google Analytics

Google Analytics

Another web tracking tool you can’t do without. Get on board if you haven’t signed up for Google Analytics.
You are able to do so much with this: Traffic sources, keywords/adwords ad conversions, referring sites, and set traffic goals. It is a must now days to add Google Analytics to your website. Do it!

extreme.jpg

The most popular free web counter on the Internet. Comes with Basic Tracking 1 & 2, Geo Tracking, System Tracking, and Referrals. Most people buying websites will ask you to insert extreme tracker on your site to show recent traffic stats.

sitemetermain.jpg

You probably seen Sitemeter traffic button like this sitemeterlogo.jpg on very popular sites like: gizmodo.com, lifehacker.com, gawker.com, and thesuperficial.com. Sitemeter is just like Statcounter in my opinion. You can sign up for Free account or pay fee to get an upgrade account. You are able to track where the visitor is coming from and what pages they are browsing on your website.

w3counterlogo.jpg

I have personally never used W3Counter but I’ve seen them around long as I can remember. I’m sure they offer same or better services as other big guys.

performancing.jpg

I signed up with Performancing about a year ago when they were in beta stage? Not many people know about Performancing. I ran performancing traffic code concurrent with Google Analytics until I removed them about 9 months ago. I switched over to StatCounter :).

I just visited this site and seems like they have really improved it. There are few inspirational stories about how some bloggers are making $1,000/month and a marketplace where you can buy and sell blogs.

AwStats

AwStats

AwStats is standard. You need a Cpanel hosting service to get this traffic stat feature. Some hosting companies like Godaddy has their own traffic counter so you wouldn’t see AwStats in account area.

Pros: It is nice that everyone uses the same traffic stats tool (standard) so this basically speaks in every language. When you are buying and selling websites, you want to provide AwStats and probably be better to show another traffic stats counter like: Google Analytics, Extreme Tracker, or Statcounter logs.

Cons: AwStats isn’t perfect. Awstats numbers can be fooled since it tracks all “Hits” and count them as unique visitors. For example: if you have an image hosting website, your files embedded on other sites will count as a visitor on your site even though people never visited your website. So, double check with another traffic counter for consistency in numbers!

Alexa Logo

Alexa rating isn’t what they use to be. Like I said, you can’t rely on one traffic counter! Did you know Alexa only counts visitors with Alexa Toolbar? For example: most Internet Explorer browser users do not have Alexa Tool Bar installed. So when these people visit your website, Alexa will not count them in stats. Make Alexa unreliable source to judge traffic stats.

competelogo.jpg

Ha! This is why all of us live and die by competition. I’m beginning to love Compete.com It is far better than Alexa. You can compare up to 5 different sites at the same time. Just sign up for free account. You get so many features and stats to look at. I highly recommend! Try them out. It is Free and this is next best thing to paid services from comScore.

Project Gatineau

gatineau.jpg

Project Gatineau is Microsoft’s new web analytics program similar to Google Analytics. It is currently in early stage so be sure to request your invite here.

Conclusion

I think the lesson here is that you can’t just rely on one traffic stats like awStats and forget about it. I suggest you install additional stat tracker like: Google Analytics, Statcounter or both on your website. Play around with it, show graphs to your friends, this will make you look smarter ;)

Mulamaker.com October Income Report :)

This is embarrassing but I’m posting it anyways. My income report is tiny compared to how much John Chow makes from his blog. I started my Mulamaker blog beginning of September and received ~2,000 visitors that month. I didn’t monetize this site until end of that month. This blog is new and my focus is on quality content to bring visitors and monetizing comes later.

I was consistent in October, posting 1 -2 posts a day, occasionally taking a break during the weekend. I’m not selling banner space, text links, paid reviews, as of yet. I will down the road when I get more visitors to this blog. Plus, my blog is just a blog where I share my findings and experiences on the Internet (usually about making money online). Anyways, I’m glad I have other means of income to pay my bills because this blog’s income doesn’t even come close. :)

Mulamaker.com Traffic Stats.

Mulamaker Traffic Stats

1st month blog traffic September = ~2,000 visitors.

October visitors = 2,950. Almost 50% increase! Nice.

Google Adsense Stats

Google Adsense = $11.96

Adsense placement on this site is very poor. I’ll move the ads around here in few days to get better control rate. I didn’t want to push too many ads in visitors eyes. Same goes for Kontera ads on this site briefly for a week.

mulakontera11.jpg
Kontera ads = $1.75 one week placement.

Earning from affiliate networks = $122.10

Gain one Clickbooth referral.

Total October Income = $135.81 lol. Dinner for 2 at a nice restaurant right there :) I put in lot of hours for $135.81?

My goal for November is to get more visitors than 2,950 in October.

Are you interested in advertising on Mulamaker? Going for cheap! $25/month? banner space 125×125, 160×600, 120×600 or bottom block 728×90? text link? By the way, I got PR3 last week ;) Interested? email me: george@mulamaker.com

Microsoft adCenter Upgrades and Project Gatineau Invites

adcenter.jpg

FINALLY! Microsoft make some changes to adcenter. Some upgrade highlights are:

- Instant editorial feedback on your ads and keywords during the creation process.
- Receive one editorial e-mail per account per day for your newly disapproved ads or keywords with consolidated e-mail notifications.

and my favorite! You are able to import adwords campaigns into adcenter! Booya! This will save so much time. I LIKE!

I been using adcenter for just over a year now, mixed feeling about it though. Few weeks ago, I paused all my campaign with adcenter. I was so busy doing other things that I forgot to check. I was charged average $6.42 per click. I’m no newbie with ppc marketing. I never paid anymore than $2-$3 click with any keywords but this campaign, I ended up paying over $6 . :( I must have hurried up and forgot to change my bids from top ranking.

MSN Cost Per Click

Another Microsoft news! I wasn’t able to find photo’s to show you but team Mashable did a great job covering Microsoft latest traffic analytics called Project Gatineau. Go check it out, looks pretty good comparison to Google Analytics.

Anyways, if you want to learn more about adcenter upgrade news, check their blog.

First wave of Project Gatineau invites have gone out already. If you are not into this or outside the U.S., you should still request an invite… When people first learned about Google Analytics, they were buying and selling invites all over the internet. Pretty high demand that time but I’m not sure how popular Gatineau will be but treat your invitation like cash. :) Request your invite here.

Next YouTube: Anime Streaming Websites?

Anime Logo We know these popular funny video and picture websites like CollegeHumor, I Am Bored, and eBaum’s World. We also know big video steaming sites like YouTube, Break, Metacafe, Dailymotion, Revver, and many more out there.

Anyways, I have been thinking about jumping into video sharing websites for past two years. I never did because I was too busy with finance job during the day and affiliate marketing every other minute I had. I knew video sites take lot of time to maintain and searching for new videos. So I put this off for past two years and I mostly focused on semi and full automated websites. However, I did ran into few “niche” video sharing sites I liked: UFC/Fight related sites, examples: WildKO and FightDump Both of these sites focus on Fight videos like UFC and Boxing. So we all hear “find a niche with less competition = easier profit” right? I thought about starting one of these fight video sites. Okay… I got another trigger of why I should get into video sharing sites. Just the other day browsing Sitepoint Marketplace, I found an interesting auction: Premium Anime Streaming site for sale.

Site info: AnimeThat.com brings in $3,000/month and over 950,000 unique visitors a month. Just two months old, asking minimum bid $17,000 and buy it now price of $27,000. Okay, stats are important but truth is many sellers hype it up to get maximum dollar amount possible. Make sure you check everything out before making a bid.

Main Page Ad Locations

Anime Ads

Second Page Ad Locations

anime_2.jpg

Finally 3rd page! Takes 3 page loads to get to viewing videos!

Anime Ads

Congrats! Very well placed adsense ads. I like the site navigation, it takes visitors three page loads to finally get to watching videos. More page loads = more ads are seen = more chances these ads are clicked on, and more money generated from CPM ads. Anime video traffic is younger? They don’t know much about ads and very curious clicking around the site? No wonder this site owner earned ~$2,000 in adsense earnings. You gave me some ideas about adsense ad placements!

Doing some digging around, there was another Anime site on sale at Sitepoint: AnimeCrunch.com little more established than AnimeThat.com. Looks like we know where AnimeThat site owner got their inspiration from. However, there are tons of Anime video sites out there and another copied site? http://www.animegiant.com ? AnimeGiant started just a month ago from Whois Domain . So we are starting to see copycat sites??

By all mean, if you want to make money from Anime video site then go for it. Video sites are not automated so you have to take time to update links and go search for new anime videos. I wouldn’t buy AnimeThat.com for $17,000 price tag. Showing just over few months of traffic/earnings stats doesn’t justify this price tag when the site can be easily duplicated for far less price. Go start your own Anime video site.

If I had the money to invest in a website? I would definitely check out Crunchyroll.com

Crunchryroll Alexa graph compared to break.com, metacafe.com, and revver.com

trafficstats.jpg

August 29th, there was an article about Crunchyroll looking for investors. Covered on TechCrunch. Article also mentioned about copyrighted videos being displayed and uploaded. From what I’m gathering on crunchyroll.com, most moderators are volunteers, and running the site on their own time. Who cares about copyrighted videos??? YouTube didn’t worry much about copyrighted videos when they first started. You run video sites to get maximum traffic as possible, then worry about revenue, copyrighted materials, and other stuff later. Once your got enough traffic then think about taking it to next level and plan an exist strategy (buyout). Crunchyroll’s traffic growth saids lot about popularity of Anime industry over the internet. If I had the money, I would definitely invest in Crunchyroll. Growth is amazing! Could be next Youtube.
